The City Bus Driver Taught Me What My Finance Degree Didn't.
Chelsea Williams, Founder Profit Kept NC
I've been playing the game of money since I was 18. In the game of money, you're either a player or a pawn, and most people never get taught which one they are. For the businesses and law firms I work with, I want to make sure you do.

How It Started
My first real money lesson didn't come from a classroom. It came from a city bus driver.
I was in high school, riding home from the mall with my best friend, when out of nowhere the driver told us to pull out a pen and paper. He walked us through it: what minimum wage actually pays, what taxes take out, what rent, groceries, and gas cost. Whatever's left is left, he told us.
That was it. Five minutes on a city bus. It's still the clearest money lesson I've ever gotten, and I have a finance degree that didn't cover it half as well.
Before the Business
I put myself through college as a single mother, working two jobs to make it happen.
My path to finance wasn't a straight line. I spent time working hands-on, blue-collar jobs before I ever sat behind a desk, including becoming the first woman in 20 years at my city's Street and Sewer division. I've never been afraid to work for what I have.
By 26, I was Vice President of a tax and accounting firm. That job taught me a lot, mostly everything I didn't want to carry into my own business one day.

How Profit Kept Started
At 30, seven months pregnant, I started what would become Profit Kept.
I built it because of one specific moment. I walked into a law office and watched the owner drowning in paperwork he never had time to understand. I asked if he'd thought about retiring. He told me, "No. I'll die at my desk." He wasn't joking, and I knew right then who I was supposed to help.
What started as a law firm-focused practice has grown into a company built to bring real financial clarity to business owners who've never been taught how to read their own numbers, which is exactly what Profit Kept NC is here to do for businesses and law firms in this area, starting with your taxes.
What I Believe
Money is 80% mental and 20% mechanics. Most business owners think they have a numbers problem. What they actually have is an avoidance problem. The numbers get simple once you stop looking away.
That's as true at tax time as it is any other time of year. A return isn't just paperwork, it's a reflection of decisions you already made. My job is to make sure those decisions were the right ones, and to help you make better ones going forward.
Beyond the Business

I work four days a week, on purpose, so I can spend time with my two kids and travel while I still can.
I run my life on one income, and I max out my own investments every year, using the same systems I build for my clients.
I'm not teaching something I don't practice myself.
